Gun safety concerns after duo pinpoint registered Perth firearm houses
There are fresh concerns over gun safety after two software engineers pinpointed locations of Perth houses with guns.
Their estimates were based off a controversial and so-called de-identified map released by WA Police, which angered gun owners but WA Police Minister Paul Papalia said the data was too broad and anyone trying to pick a location of a firearm owner would just be “guessing”.
But one of the engineers, who demonstrated his method to WAtoday, said he produced a street-level map complete with satellite imagery “in a few hours on a Friday night” by feeding it through publicly available software.
National Shooting Council national secretary Neil Jenkins told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast the ease with which houses were pinpointed using the police map was a huge safety risk should the data fall into the wrong hands.
“We’ve been provided with maps that show the houses, even to garages were the safes are stored, believe it or not,” he said.
“Also a list of addresses, which has partially been blocked out.
“We didn’t want ourselves to see the addresses but it has been produced and we have provided it to WA Police and the Police Minister to show this has been done, and offering to show the process to them so they can resolve it.”
