DAY 8: After a weekend cruising across the North West towing his luxurious Jayco Outback Journey with partner Tricia by his side, Steve Mills arrived in Wyndham, 105km northwest of Kununurra, for the sixth live broadcast of his Long Way to the Top tour.

The most northerly township in WA, perched beneath the Bastion Range, Wyndham is surrounded by some of the Kimberley’s most spectacular landforms, rivers and wetlands, offering a host of outback adventures.

The town is situated at the mouth of the King, Pentecost, Durack, Forest and Ord Rivers in the Cambridge Gulf, making it one of the more underrated and beautiful spots in the state, with Millsy broadcasting from the Croc Cafe (pictured above, with owner Ellen).

“Everywhere I’ve gone today I’ve met characters,” Millsy said, before introducing us to Brolga (below), asking him why he was called such.

“Well, I’ve got big long legs and I do a bit of dancing and wobbling and carrying on,” he told Millsy.

“That hotel across the road, the Wyndham Hotel, back in 1974 used to get me into trouble.

“The old museum was the courthouse, so I used to go there on Mondays and pay me fines.

“That silly judge said to me one day after visiting him a couple of times, he said ‘Brolga, when your legs get wobbly, you go home’.

“I said ‘judge, when I got there they were wobbly’.”

Brolga funnily enough now manages the museum – that used to be the courthouse – every Monday.

Millsy also caught up with another charming local Pixie (above), who runs the second-hand store in Wyndham.

Pixie has been in the town for 37 years, “taking everyone’s junk and selling it”.

Millsy couldn’t believe it when she sold him a cat-like keyring with his daughter’s name on it for just 20 cents.

“It’s worth $2 every day, so I couldn’t haggle,” Millsy said.

Admirably aided by his lovely partner Tricia capturing the action behind the scenes, Millsy is on a radio road trip adventure, broadcasting live from some the state’s most remote and renowned towns and destinations.

Millsy is on air daily from 12pm to 3pm, capturing the qualities of each town and the people that make them tick, with his journey detailed in his Long Way to the Top tour blog, which we’ll update after each broadcast.
