WA businesses continue to feel the pain as skills shortage surges

WA businesses continue to struggle with finding the labor needed to keep their companies afloat.

Local businesses throughout the entire state are feeling the pain, especially the hospitality sector.

Darren Haunold, Managing Director of Wills Domain in Margaret River told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the hospitality sector has faced this problem for quiet a few years now.

“If the world thinks WA has had it easy, I think we beg to differ. We’ve been capping and slowing our business down for the last two years now just because we simply can’t find the labor that was lost pre-pandemic,” he told Oly.

“These are jobs that young Australians aren’t taking on, that we’ve relied upon internationally and well trained working holiday visas for the last 12 years now. It’s an issue that hasn’t just popped it – a lack of action on it means we don’t have the resources we need to operate the hospitality industry.”

“We’re just not seeing enough action and in our experience we do not see young Australians seeing the hospitality industry as something that they would like to get involved in.”
