Interviews with year 12 students and their parents reveal deliberately intervening at that critical can have life-changing consequences, not always positive.

Dr Jason Goopy, a music education lecturer at Edith Cowan University and Australian Society for Music Education vice president told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings new research shines a light on the critical role parental values and assumptions play in either influencing or discouraging high achieving students to pursue a career in music.

“These were my students I was teaching at the time, and these were unexpected findings that emerged, I was really blown away by the power of parents to have their values influence students and their future decisions,” he said.

“Their ability to shape, form and disrupt their child’s developing a musical identity was really something that took me by surprise.”
