A spearfisherman is in a stable condition at Hedland Health Campus after a suspected shark attack in Port Hedland this morning.

The man in his 30s had his left arm almost severed in the incident and was treated on shore by St John’s Ambulance crews before being transported to hospital.

A St John Ambulance WA spokeswoman said two crews were sent to meet a boat that rushed to shore about 11.30am.

The exact location of the attack remains unknown.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is arranging for the man to be flown south to be taken to Royal Perth Hospital on Friday afternoon for treatment to his injuries.

Emergency services were alerted around 11.30am, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service also being informed.

The Department of Fisheries was earlier trying to confirm whether a shark was involved but the Surf Life Saving WA twitter account posted a sighting of an unknown shark in the area at 11.40am.
