Dockers, Eagles still in the money for AFL’s magic round
The AFL’s inaugural magic round is bound for South Australia after the league accepted the state government’s enthusiastic bid to host the event.
The location for the extra round means each team will play 23 games over 24 rounds in 2023, with the Barossa Valley wine region to host one of the nine matches fixtured to be played in SA over one weekend. AFL reporter Michelangelo Rucci says the initiative, which adds $500,000 to each club’s coffers and some extra revenue to players, comes at a critical time for SA football.
“WA got a grand final, Brisbane got a grand final… so it’s going to be very helpful at a time when we’ve seen in Adelaide that people are still reluctant to go back to Adelaide Oval, through this pandemic,” he told Brad Hardie and Simon Beaumont on 6PR Mornings.
