Indonesia’s Parliament has passed a controversial criminal code, that includes laws to ban sex outside marriage.

It also makes it illegal to insult the President.

Critics say the Bill, which has been decades in the making, undermines civil liberties.

Ross Taylor, Founder and former president of the Indonesia Institute told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that the ban will come into law subject to a few processes, including being signed off by the President.

“In addition it also says you should not co-habitat, which means if you go with your partner and you’re not married in Bali for a holiday and you promise that you will abstain from any sexual activity, but the fact that you co-habitat could be illegal,” he told Oly.

“In the fine print, it does say quiet clearly that for the police to come in and arrest you, it must first be subject to a formal complaint by one of the people concerned, a close family member, and then the police can act.”
