The Fitzroy floods have caused major disruptions to road freight in the Kimberly region, forcing transport vehicles to journey 6,000km via South Australia and Northern Territory to move freight from Perth into east Kimberly.

Cam Dumesny, Western Roads Federation Chief Executive told Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings that it will take a number of days for the water levels to reach a point where more roads can reopen.

“The water around the bridge has droppped 3-4 metres, we now have piles exposed so we can see we have lost one set of piles and we know that’s in the middle where you can see the big hole in the deck,” Mr Dumesny said.

“This was a 1 in 100 flood, that bridge has never gone over in the 50 years it has been built – our waterway people will deal with that and clearly it will have to be a bit higher than what it is.”
