Blowfish attacks on the rise across Perth beaches
Yesterday, Jo McManus announced she was bitten by a blowfish at the beach on the weekend.
This prompted a discussion and apparently, blowfish bites are becoming increasingly more common.
This time of year is their breeding season and so ‘blowies’ migrate from estuaries into the ocean to breed.
Marine Biologist from Murdoch University Dr James Tweedley told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons blowies prefer to live in urbanised areas.

“Blowies are particularly adaptable to urbanisation,” said Dr Tweedley.
“It’s a fairly common thing.”
But he warns people to be careful because blowfish are highly toxic, especially during breeding seasons.
