Bob Smith was one of the “plane people” diverted and then stranded in a remote town in Canada during the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The incredible actions of those who looked after the standard passengers were the inspiration behind the new musical Come From Away, showing soon at Crown Theatre.

Mr Smith told Jo McManus on 6PR Afternoons the local community were incredibly generous.

“We didn’t know until we got on the ground what was going on,” said Mr Smith.

“There wasn’t anything they couldn’t do for us.”
