‘A broken promise’: Opposition vows to fight electoral reform laws
The state opposition has vowed to fight the government’s electoral reform laws which will be passed through parliament today.
The Electoral Equality Bill will see six metropolitan and regional upper house districts abolished, and a ‘one vote, one value’ system introduced.
The upper house will also increase from 36 to 37 members.
Opposition Leader Mia Davies says it’s a loss for regional Western Australians.
“It really does challenge me that this does come down to us worrying about our own political hide,” she told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast.
“I am genuinely concerned that we will lose regional voices, no matter which political party is in the parliament … “.

Former Premier Colin Barnett added to those sentiments.
“What is the point of having two house of parliament if they basically do the same function,” he told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
“Let’s recognise the regional component of this state”.
