World Vision’s Ukraine Response Director Catherine Green has returned to her hometown of Perth after spending 12 months in the war-torn country.

Ms Green talked to Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings  not long after her homecoming, describing the challenge of providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine as “enormous”.

“There are over 17 million people in Ukraine who have gone form not needing humanitarian assistance a year ago to needing humanitarian assistance,” Ms Green said.

“There are 5 million people internally displaced; that’s overwhelming for a country.”

Ms Green described the feeling of working in a management role in a warzone as “surreal”, telling Gary Adshead life goes on while bombs are falling around them.

“In the middle of all of it there’ll be an air alarm, and then everyone will just pick up their laptops and kind of carry on and head to the shelter,” she said.

“It’s been going on for such a long time, you can see that people are getting used to it; it’s becoming an inconvenience.”
