Aboriginal corporation on verge of administration over book “irregularities”
A not-for-profit Aboriginal corporation – managed and promoted by fierce critics of the McGowan government’s handling of Banksia Hill Detention Centre – is insolvent with almost $500,000 debt, a $525,000 tax bill and serious questions to answer about how money has been spent.
Ngalla Maya is run by West Australian activist Mervyn Eades and has received more than $6 million in taxpayer-funded grants from the state and federal governments for an employment and training scheme.
But after an examination by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, Ngalla Maya has until next month to explain a long list of “irregularities”.

Eades confirmed in an interview with Gary Adshead on 6PR Mornings that Ngalla Maya was insolvent and said he intended to wind up the organisation following the ORIC report.
“I suspect on reasonable grounds the corporation is insolvent and the directors have continued to trade whilst the corporation is insolvent,” a delegate to ORIC registrar Tricia Stroud wrote in a letter to Ngalla Maya’s directors.
