ADHD ‘bottleneck’ leading to risky diagnoses, peak body warns
The Institute of Clinical Psychologists wants General Practitioners to be permitted to diagnose and medicate ADHD patients, as more and more assessments are being rushed through avenues like Telehealth.
The ICP warn the pressure on diagnoses is creating a “significant risk” of patients being misdiagnosed.
ICP President and Clinical Psychologist Doctor Marjorie Collins told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons it’s not necessarily a case of over-diagnosis as it is a “catch-up” of previously undiagnosed patients.
“It’s also potentially people being diagnosed with ADHD when in fact it’s another condition, because there are common symptoms across a number of different conditions that are similar to one another,” Dr Collins said.
