Agency’s 20-year roadmap to create more affordable housing

A new report from Anglicare Australia looks at the future of housing in Australia .

‘Housing for All’ includes a range of ideas for government and associated agencies to fix the housing “meltdown”, as well as stinging comments about the inability of governments to address the issue adequately.

Anglicare WA CEO Mark Glasson said the long-term plans aim to fix the housing system and get every person into a house, with 500,000 new social housing and low-cost rental properties earmarked to be constructed over the next 20 years.

“What we’re saying is, it’s a massive problem that will take a big change to fix it… we’ve got a plan here over the next 10 years that we think will make a difference,” he told Gary Adshead, in for Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.

“I think the way the private rental market has been structured, with the support through negative gearing benefits and capital gains tax concessions, has turned housing into an investment rather than a provision of an essential human need.

“I don’t want to be seen to be having a crack at people who have got private houses in the rental market, the key issue here is we would be in a world more pain if that wasn’t the case.”
