The man often touted as the godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, has quit Google after making the shock announcement he regrets developing the technology to its current state.

Mr Hinton cited concerns over the flood of misinformation, the possibility for AI to upend the job market, and the “existential risk” posed by the creation of a true digital intelligence.

Co-director of the Centre for AI and the Future of Business Matt Kuperholz said it was concerning news, but he has faith that regulators and common sense would limit the ability of AI to affect our lives.

“We should also see that there’s potential for this to be our greatest ever invention, and something which catapults us to the next level,” Mr Kuperholz said.
