The Armadale train line will shut down for up to 18 months while it undergoes a major upgrade.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the works will see four new stations built in Victoria Park and Cannington, the removal of 12 level crossings across the line, and elevated rail installed in certain sections.

The Armadale train station will also be rebuilt.

The cost of the upgrade is expected to be around $2 billion with works commencing in early 2023.

“We examined all options, and it was felt that this option is the quicker option,” Ms Saffioti said on 6PR Breafkast.

“I know people may find that hard to believe, but it is the quicker option in the fact that we won’t have to be coming in and underatking different closures at different times … over a two or three year period.

“So this is 18 months, but the work will be completed.”
