Artificial sweeteners may not be a better alternative to sugar, study shows
A new publication in the Frontiers of Nutrition journal has found that various artificial sweeteners are potentially capable of damaging the lining of the intestine.
Two commonly controversial types used in soft drinks and foods include Neotame and Aspartame.
Accredited Practicing Dietician and Chief Health Officer of Healthylife Simone Austin told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons in most circumstances people don’t consume enough to warrant concern but making general switches to natural sweeteners such as fruit is the best way to go.
“The reason an artificial sweetener has no calories is because you don’t absorb it like you would sugar…I wouldn’t be spending all the extra money personally on the sweeteners.”
