Up to 19,000 asylum seekers who arrived illegally in Australia more than a decade ago, may be granted permanent residency as a result of changing visa rules.

There’s concern the move could spark an influx of new boat arrivals, but the Albanese Government argues people that arrived in Australia before “Operation Sovereign Borders” deserve some certainty.

CEO of Refugee Council of Australia Paul Power says the visa overhaul will provide these people with the opportunity to get on with their lives.
