Aussie sailor eyes a beer and shower after record 92-day feat
After 92 days at sea, Australian sailor and adventurer Lisa Blair broke the world record for the fastest person to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around Antarctica.
She snatched the title off the Russians, clear the previous record by 10 days, making landfall in Albany on Wednesday morning to claim the Antarctic Cup and World Sailing Speed Record for the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth’s southernmost continent.
“I’m just about to have my shower for the first time in 92 days… and then we’re going to the pub to celebrate,” an excited Blair told Millsy at Midday host Steve Mills, before detailing some of her adventures.
“I had storms generating waves the size of a 5-storey building… my boat’s height is 1.3m.
“To look up at a 12m wave bearing down on you in the middle of a storm, in the middle of the Southern Ocean can be terrifying, as much as it is magical.
“I had snowstorms, blizzards, lots of hail… some amazing sunsets, lots of bird life down in the Southern Ocean.”
