Australian immigration policy deemed a deprivation of liberty
The Federal Government has suffered a major legal blow, with the High Court once again ruling that part of its immigration policy is unconstitutional.
David Manne, human rights lawyer, explained to 6PR’s Gary Adshead how a blanket decision to impose ankle bracelet monitors and curfews on refugees constitutes punishments that seriously restrict their liberty.
‘There are laws in this country under the constitution to protect everyone’s rights, and that everyone, whether a citizen or non-citizen, should have the same protections of their freedom and dignity under the law,’ he said.”
