The retail outlet is celebrating its 185th birthday, after opening on the corner of George and Barrack street in Sydney in 1838. 

 Australian Financial Review Fashion Editor Lauren Sams told Julie-anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons hopefully David Jones will remain relevant given its history and the challenge of competing with online shopping. 

“Retailers particularly those that are very traditional bricks and mortar they have a real problem on their hands.” said Ms Sams  

“It’s had a bit of chequered past”… “it’s also have a really remarkable past in terms of its place in fashion and in retail in Australia and also in pop culture.”
