‘Australia’s more than that’: Stephen Jones tells his very personal story behind his parliamentary speech slamming discrimination
This week Federal Labor frontbencher Stephen Jones revealed to parliament about the suicide of his gay nephew and the fears for his own son’s safety in a powerful speech during the debate on the proposed Religious Discrimination Bill.
Mr Jones joined Mark Gibson on The Catch Up to speak about his personal story and why the Bill has to be amended to reflect all Australians.
“We as politicians often try and project an image of ourselves that aligns with the image that we think Australia is,” the Stephen Jones said.
“We’ll put on a footy jumper, or we’ll toss some sausages on a charity barbecue. That’s all good, but Australia’s more than that. It’s made up of kids like mine and kids like everybody else, and there’s got to be a part for them in our national story.”
