‘Ban stone or we will’: Union’s ultimatum as silicosis deaths rise
The Australian Council of Trade Unions has given final notice to the Federal Government on engineered stone, saying they will move to outlaw the mining, manufacturing and construction of stone benchtops and other products if they don’t.
The ACTU claims as many as 100,000 workers will be diagnosed with silicosis, with a further 11,000 diagnosed with cancer.
ACTU Assistant Secretary Liam O’Brien told Gary Adshead onĀ 6PR Mornings they have joined with the CMFEU in delivering a solid message to the industry.
“What the union has said is that imported stone – which is all imported – will not be transported, loaded or delivered in the name of the safety of our members,” Mr O’Brien said.
