Premier Mark McGowan has announced a new public health measure after further cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the state.

From 6pm tonight, all licenced hospitality venues will be permitted to conduct seated services only.

This measure will be in place until December 28, in an effort to further limit any potential spread of the virus in the community.

Mr McGowan said the rule allows for Christmas lunches and dinners to continue safely as planned, but will impact larger venues such as pubs and bars.

It comes as the state records five new cases, all linked to the backpacker recorded yesterday.

One was a close contact of the 25-year-old, while the remaining three were considered casual contacts.

There is little information known on the fifth case, who was identified as Mr McGowan conducted his press conference.

All had attended an event at The Mess Hall in Perth.

Yesterday, 10,267 tests were administered.

Further genomic testing is required to identify what strain of the virus is circulating.

Border arrangements will also be adjusted as states across the nation record skyrocketing case numbers.

South Australia today recorded 688 new infections, while Queensland recorded 589.

“This is a major concern,” Mr McGowan said. “That is why both South Australia and Queensland will be reclassified from medium risk jurisdictions to high risk jurisdictions.”

This means arrivals must be approved, fully vaccinated and comply with testing requirements before and after arriving in WA, and undertake a 14-day self quarantine period.

“This is about protecting them, your families and the community,” Mr McGowan concluded.
