UPDATE: Sadly a number of the beached pilot whales have died overnight.
The Department of Parks and Wildlife say recue “rescue efforts for live whales continue”, while “the focus of the Incident Management Team is to ensure the safety of staff and volunteers and the welfare of the whales.”

“The response zone has a range of hazards, including large, distressed and potentially sick whales, sharks, waves, heavy machinery and vessels,” a DBCA statement read.

A large pod of pilot whales earlier filmed swimming in a cluster off Cheynes Beach, 60 kilometres east of Albany coast have beached themselves.

Locals are rushing to help at the beach near the town of Albany on the state’s south coast, but authorities have asked that they stay away for now.

Joanne from Cheynes Beach Caravan Park spoke with Oly Peterson on 6PR’s Perth Live.
