COVID-19 UPDATE

One of Mark McGowan’s children has been hospitalised in a serious condition due to a COVID-19 infection.

The WA Premier has been isolating at home since Tuesday after a family member contracted the virus and has since tested positive to COVID-19.

A statement on Friday evening from McGowan’s office said one of his children, who is fully vaccinated, was in hospital and “receiving ongoing treatment”.

“The McGowan family asks for privacy regarding the situation at this difficult time,” the statement said.

The Premier on Thursday said he would continue to work from his Rockingham home in isolation after the initial positive test in the family, and on Friday confirmed he had the virus, saying his infection was “not surprising”.

“In accordance with the protocols, this will extend my quarantine period until I am hopefully cleared to leave home next Thursday afternoon, at the earliest,” McGowan said earlier.

“I will continue to quarantine and work from home over this period.”

The Premier’s infection comes less than 24 hours after COVID halted Federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese’s election campaign trip to WA.

Albanese revealed he had tested positive on Thursday night after a routine PCR test ahead of his trip west, scheduled for Friday, before Labor was due to officially launch its election campaign in Perth on Sunday.

The latest developments on Friday came as WA recorded 8777 coronavirus cases overnight.

There were 258 people with COVID-19 in hospital and nine in ICU. Five historical deaths were also recorded, including a woman in her 50s and man in his 60s.
