Bromances blossom along Broome’s bustling coastal strip
LONG WAY TO THE TOP: Broome time
Day 23/24: Things were bound to get hairy on the home stretch of Millsy’s incredible Long Way To The Top tour.
After five weeks on the road and the finish line in sight, signing off with a week in WA’s famed tourist mecca Broome was bound to bring the best out of Steve Mills and freshly-acquainted Millsy at Midday producer Andrew Murdoch.
A multicultural melting pot, Broome is a tropical delight, a constant adventure steeped in rich history and the gateway to the Kimberley, one of the world’s great wildernesses.
The coastal setting seemed the ideal landing spot to usher in the final week of Millsy’s epic five-week road trip across some of WA and the NT’s most desirable and deserted towns, with Steve and partner Tricia in tow aboard the Jayco caravan treating listeners to the characters and charms of some of our most cherished, dinky-di destinations.
Wednesday began with the live broadcast from the beautiful Mangrove Hotel overlooking the famous 22km Cable Beach, with Toni Flanagan joining Millsy to chat about Shinju Matsuri, Broome’s famous Festival of the Pearl, a 16-day festival that celebrates Broome’s unique and diverse culture and history.
Mangrove Hotel general manager Glyn Batten also stopped by to check on the crew, before champion WA jockey Peter Hall reminisced with Millsy about his brilliant career, which included seven Broome Cups, and his role in retirement mentoring younger racers.

The thrilling afternoon had one final surprise in store, when Millsy’s probing, stark-mad producer Andrew Murdoch paid a visit to Broome’s famous Nude Beach.
Sausage rolls were the last thing on the mind, with Andy going truly gonzo for his devilish story, stripping to his birthday suit to chat with fellow nudists on the shore.
We’re not sure who took the photo – hopefully not Millsy’s partner Trish, who’s already endured her fair share of shenanigans this trip – but Andy showed his worth but delving deeper than most radio producers for his stark report.

The Broome Visitor Centre was the scene of Thursday’s show, with Broome Tramway Co owner Matt Western giving Steve the VIP treatment, before the show took an enlightening turn when Greg Quicke, aka Space Gandalf, stopped by for a chat.
Quicke is a self-taught astronomer who started an astronomy business in 1995 with no idea it would still be going. His stargazing shows are world famous and a major tourism attraction in town.

Millsy’s last live broadcast on the road was Friday, before he hangs up the mic, packs up the Jayco, and he and Trish undergo two, 12-hour drives back home to Perth.
