The first fatal shark attack in 100 years on Perth’s Swan River has prompted a debate over whether WA Fisheries should monitor the number of bull sharks in the river.

Griffith University marine ecologist, Dr Johan Gustafson, told Gary Adshead tagging bull sharks is beneficial due to the lack of knowledge about the species.

“Believe it or not we still don’t know a large amount about them – we know broad movements and broad scale behaviours of bull sharks but not the fine details – I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Dr Gustafson said.
