Captain Smith takes stunning Ashes catch
Steve Smith got down low to complete a one-handed catch in the slips from Mitchell Starc’s delivery at the SCG on Friday.
Steve Smith dismissed any doubts over his fielding with a sensational catch against England early on day two of the fifth and final Ashes Test in Sydney.
After dropping Alastair Cook twice in Melbourne as the England opener went on to celebrate a remarkable double ton in the Boxing Day Test, Smith’s woes in the field continued on Thursday when the Australia captain spilled another chance.
Dawid Malan was given a life on 34 at the SCG but he was not so lucky on Friday after Smith got down low to complete a one-handed catch in the slips from Mitchell Starc’s delivery, leaving England 251-6.
It was Smith’s 51st Test catch since the beginning of 2016 – the most of any fielder with England skipper Joe Root (37) second.

The Ashes is already in Australian hands as Smith’s men enjoy an unassailable 3-0 series lead following last week’s drawn fourth Test.
