Cardiologist shares heart attack warning after several high profile cases

After several high profile Australians suffered heart attacks, 6PR Mornings made the call out for a cardiologist to take listeners’ calls.

Over the weekend, dual Essendon premiership player Dean Wallis was left recovering in hospital after suffering a major heart attack in regional Victoria.

Aged 52, Wallis’ cardiac event occurred days after cricket legend Shane Warne, and politician Kimberley Kitching died suddenly of a heart attack at the same age.

Dr Matthew Best, a cardiologist from the Perth Cardiovascular Institute, told Liam Bartlett that men have to be wearier of heart disease at an earlier age.

“Men will get heart disease ten years younger than their female counterparts, so they definitely want to be tested earlier,” he said.

“The heart foundation is suggesting that you get tested at 45 if you’re a man and if you’re 30 if you’re Aboriginal (or) Torres Strait Islanders.”
