Carmakers concerned with new efficiency standards

The motoring industry is up in arms with the Federal Government that is squeezing car manufacturers by shifting the needle on fuel efficiency standards on new cars being sold in Australia.

The aim is to force car manufacturers to sell more electric and hybrid cars in Australia, the new standards will come into effect in 2025.

Moto Trades Association WA CEO Stephen Moir told Oliver Peterson on 6PR’s Perth Live there’s a very good chance manufacturers may start ignoring Australia entirely.

“The big issue Australia’s got is we are 1% of the international market,” Moir said.

“The big manufacturers have zero incentive to bring cars which is why we only have about 50 electric cars  in Australia compared to well over 250 in Europe.”

“You need to ease this in, you can’t come in with a sledge hammer.”
