The Corruption Crime Commission are investigating allegations of serious misconduct in relation to the death of a 16-year-old in Casuarina Detention Centre’s notorious Unit 18.

Corrective Services Minister Paul Papalia held a sombre press conference today after the tragic death of the detainee, who was found unresponsive in his cell last week.

He’s admitted Unit 18 is not the kind of detention he wants — and says the government has to make it better.

“Unit 18 is not what I would hope for in terms of a facility to house this challenging and often dangerous cohort,” Mr Papalia said.
