Almost 1000 Chinese-made surveillance cameras, intercoms, and electronic entry systems will be removed “as soon as possible” from Australian government buildings amid concerns information is being fed back to Beijing.

Defence Minister Richard Marles says the government will take action, but it’s important the process isn’t rushed.

Federal Opposition spokesperson on Cyber Security James Paterson told Gary Adshead it’s not only a security risk but also a moral issue.

“It is frankly flabergasting that someone in the department thought it was appropriate to purchase these,” Mr Paterson said.

Former National Cyber Security Adviser to the Prime Minister’s office, Alistair MacGibbon, says he understands why these Chinese-made surveillance cameras were installed.

“In defence of those that have installed these devices, they’re cheap and they work well – it’s the unintended consequences that we are only starting to unpack and understand now,” Mr MacGibbon said on 6PR Mornings.
