City of Stirling social housing mandate controversy

The City of Stirling will force property developers to provide a quota of social housing accommodation as part of any new developments of 20 or more units.

Sandra Brewer, Executive director, Property Council WA told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live that it is very unusual to see a local government dabble in planning policies in regards to affordable housing.

“It certainly is confusing for the development industry. Our members are quite concerned and frustrated at yet another local government planning policy that has been created with probably not a lot of thought to the impact it will have on the supply of affordable housing,” she told Oly.

“I really don’t think it is the role of local governments to handle this challenge.”
