Three individuals have been charged and are scheduled to appear in court after police allegedly discovered a 3D-printed firearm and the necessary equipment for its production near Perth.

Honourary Professor from Murdoch University and Forensic Scientist James Speers joined Julie-Anne Sprague on 6PR Afternoons to discuss the potential use of 3D printers in creating weapons. 

“This is what I’ve been trying to say for a number years now, that we need to take this seriously,” Professor Speers said.

“Currently, to date in Australia, it’s [3D printers are] primarily [used for] hobbies, but if it gets into criminal gangs or bikie gangs, then you’re into a very serious matter because they have the resources to purchase high end equipment and generate very functional, sophisticated weapons.”
