Correction and apology to Cameron Western
On July 12 last year, 6PR broadcast and published at this location an interview with the mother of the late Joshua Warneke with Liam Bartlett about the expected promotion of two police officers who were involved in the investigation of Mr Warneke’s death.
At the time of the proposed promotion, we were concerned about how the proposed promotions might reflect on the WA police force in the context of a prior public Corruption and Crime Commission report which expressed some misgivings about the police investigation. The matter was also current as a Coroner’s Inquest could have been imminently called.
One of those officers, Cameron Western, who is now a Superintendent, was concerned that the broadcast made defamatory allegations about his position within the force, and we are more than happy to make the following correction and apology.
We are told by Superintendent Western’s lawyers, and have no difficulty accepting that the Corruption and Crime Commission found that Superintendent Western did not engage in misconduct in the course of the police investigation.
We also accept that the police investigation was not solely responsible for Gene Gibson being wrongly imprisoned. The DPP laid the indictment against Mr Gibson and Mr Gibson pleaded guilty to manslaughter, although his conviction was set aside as a miscarriage of justice by the Court of Appeal due to a variety of factors relating to the circumstances immediately prior to his plea.
If the interview suggested otherwise, we at 6PR are happy to apologise to Superintendent Western for any damage, distress and embarrassment he suffered.
