The Bayswater Council have voted 6-5 to knock back a proposal to build a flag pole that would predominantly be used to fly a pride flag and other optional flags on certain days such as Harmony and R U OK day.

Bayswater Mayor Filoemena Piffaretti casted the deciding vote and has not publicly provided her reason for voting down the proposed flag pole.

Speaking as an individual and not on behalf of the City of Bayswater, Councillor Nat Latter told Oliver Peterson on 6PR’s Perth Live that it was a disappointing result.

“It’s a pretty small cost for a permanent way to demonstrate our commitment to welcoming, celebrating and respecting LGBTQ people in the city of Bayswater,” Councillor Latter said.

“Sometimes you need a signal to show that a space is a welcoming place for you.”
