Legendary Australian rugby player and commentator Wally Lewis is the latest name on a growing list of sports stars being diagnosed with CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

The diagnosis comes as the issue of concussions in sport, and how athletes are protected especially in their later years, becomes a major priority.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe told Gary Adshead on 6PR MorningsĀ Mr Lewis is sadly showing multiple signs of cognitive degeneration.

“He can’t recall the names of things, he repeated himself when talking with his partner; I think that level of vulnerability, to talk about that, is both amazing and heart-breaking.”
