The parents of Queensland boy Daniel Morcombe have labelled a new movie depicting the hunt for their child’s murderer as “callously disrespectful” after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

Daniel was 13 years old in December 2003 when he was snatched from a bus stop on the Sunshine Coast and murdered. His killer, Bunbury-born convicted pedophile Brett Peter Cowan, was caught after an extensive eight-year investigation.

Bruce Morcombe told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings they were calling for a boycott of the new Australian film The Stranger about his son, saying it is “making money off a heinous crime”.

“The family were blindsided by the making of this movie,” he told Bartlett on Friday.

“We just feel it was a low blow and uncalled for … it appears to be glorifying an horrific crime.

“This is just a trigger for all those emotions you try to suppress day to day.”

The movie “The Stranger” is not supported by the Morcombe family. Individuals who make money on a heinous crime are parasites.
