David Mundy and his finals heartbreak

David Mundy

As we begin preliminary final week, Fremantle legend David Mundy has reminisced on Wide World of Sports about the heartbreak and euphoria preliminary finals can bring.

“It hurts more losing prelims than grand finals.”

Mundy recalled the 2013 preliminary final against Sydney which the Dockers dominated.

“We started like a house on fire, halfway through the second quarter the game was done. MCG chants started going up around the ground in the third quarter. You could really take a moment to enjoy that vibe and energy brought by the crowd.”

On the flip-side, Mundy has experienced heartache as well, telling Adam Papalia that the loss to Hawthorn in 2015 “still burns”.

“Losing prelim finals is gut-wrenching. You fight so hard and any team is worthy and to get to the final hurdle to give an opportunity really hurts.”
