Daytime robberies are occurring openly and regularly across Perth, leaving the public bewildered and baffled as to why nothing is being done about it.

Shelley was one of several listeners who sent emails to 6PR Breakfast on the issue, relaying theft was rife at her regular Woolworths store in Wellard.

“The word is spreading that you can just walk in, take what you want, and walk out,” she told host Gareth Parker.

Shelley’s story prompted a talkback frenzy, with Breakfast listeners telling Gareth the problem of brazen theft was widespread, including this story from Dan in Kinross.

“There’s a service station in Maddington, I’ve witnessed it a couple of times, a mother and her daughters, on the days when the fuel is a bit cheaper and the queues are long, basically just walking in and grabbing whatever they want, and walking straight out.

“And I raised it with the staff and they said ‘yeah we can’t do anything about it, we’re understaffed and not allowed to confront them’. They come in and it’s like a weekly shop for them. And it’s fairly rampant across a few servos, they just wait for the busy days and they’re walking in and out basically without being noticed.”

Another caller Hayden relayed seeing one thief walk out of a supermarket “with about $800 worth of meat in the trolley”.

Jane also told Gareth that police told her that if the theft is under $1000, they will only issue a ticket if they are caught.
