The Australian building industry has 27,000 fewer apprentices and trainees than last year, and experts say this rate makes the goal of building 1.2 million homes by 2029 unachievable.

Matt King, Senior Economist at the Housing Industry Association, explained to 6PR’s Chrissy Morrissy why there is such a shortage and what the industry will need to reach the housing goal.

“Our research and data indicate that for us to build 1.2 million homes, we need an additional 83,000 skilled trades workers in the residential building industry over the next five years,” he said.
