‘Definition of insanity’: Father and son rejected 5 times trying to get home to WA

A father and son stranded on the other side of the border is appealing for mercy from the state government.

Donald sent his 14-year-old son to stay with his uncle in Victoria amid his mental health challenges.

The father flew to South Australia earlier this month to meet him and bring him home to Western Australia but since then they’ve been unable to return.

“His uncle could no longer look after him and so we tried to get him back to WA and that’s where essentially the problems started arising,” Donald told Mark Gibson on 6PR Breakfast.

“We understood there was extreme risk from Victoria so we couldn’t get him back directly.”

He said the plan was to travel to meet up in South Australia, quarantine for 14 days, and then travel back to WA.

“I’ve applied five times and been rejected five times as a returning resident, with no reason as to why I am being rejected.”

They have been stuck in South Australia since 7 December, despite being double vaccinated.

He said it was the “definition of insanity” and they were happy to quarantine in Perth.

He said he doesn’t want any special treatment, he just wants to know how he can get home.
