DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm has told Gareth Parker on 6PR Breakfast that the fires in the Wheatbelt region are the most significant area of concern.

“Up in the eastern Wheatbelt, up around Corrigin and Bruce Rock and largely because they were the last ones to get the really severe fire weather that has occurred since Friday in the southwest and yesterday out there,” he said.

“Often with these (bushfires), there’s a day or so of really frenetic activity when the fires are escalating, and then once we get in control of these fires, there’s a week or two weeks of work to make everything safe and obviously the recovery.”

The Commissioner said that the eastern Wheatbelt fires had grown with rapid rates of spread due to the wind and the ‘openness of the fuel.’

There have been four homes lost due to the fires in Denmark and one home damaged. Commissioner Klemm said that DFES should release the damage assessment for Bridgetown later today.
