‘Diminished’ McGowan told to butt out and ‘get your own house in order’
Federal Member for Canning Andrew Hastie has lambasted Mark McGowan for attacking Peter Dutton after his party’s devastating election loss, backing him as next Liberal leader.
“As Peter Dutton said overnight, we don’t need to tack right or left, we need to focus on the fundamentals, and double down on it,” Hastie told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
“Those values are universal to all Australians, they’re Australian values… I joined the Liberal party back in 2013 because I believed in the platform of the Liberal Party and we need to return to it and focus on those fundamentals.”
He backed Dutton as an effective minister after the likely next leader of the federal party was labelled an “extremist” by the WA Premier, and compared to a Harry Potter villain by Labor frontbencher Tanya Plibersek today, which earned a sharp rebuke by new PM Anthony Albanese.
“It really diminished him [McGowan] as the Premier – he needs to get his own house in order before he goes poking in the affairs of others,” Hastie said.
“He needs to fix the hospital system here and the ambulance ramping, before he starts giving us lectures on intellect and personal attacks.
“Putting that to one side, the media has worked pretty hard to frame Peter Dutton in a certain way, and I know he is just like a lot of other regular Australians.”
