Western Australia is the only one of three states not adopting the national construction code to make new homes more accessible for people with disabilities.

Disability and housing advocates are calling for the standards to be made mandatory to join New South Wales and South Australia.

“There’s a fear that it may add further stress to the sector,” he said.

“But that’s something we’d like to explore further with the government because we think those issues can be overcome,

“The cost of retrofitting far outweighs the benefit of the upfront cost.”
