Dr TikTok? The downside to using social media to self diagnose
Health practitioners have welcomed an uptick in mental health awareness but warned of growing fears about an influx of misdiagnoses on social media.
Australian Psychology Society president Dr Tamara Cavenett said many young Australians are flocking to psychologists, having already self diagnosed their illness on TikTok, such as Australian influencer Ella Watkins (above), but there is a downside.
“We’re seeing difficulty accessing really good treatment and assessment services, and so when that happens what you can get is people thinking they have something that they don’t, or misdiagnosing something and getting treatment for something that they don’t have,” she told Liam Bartlett on 6PR Mornings.
