There’s been a long list of terrible ideas propagated by social media, but none get nearly as dangerous as those that promote ingesting poison.

The latest attempts to enter the Darwin Awards revolve around drinking a solution of Borax: also known as sodium borate and widely used as a domestic cleaner and pesticide.

University of Tasmania Senior Lecturer Doctor Nathan Kilah told Gary Adshead onĀ 6PR Mornings there’s some very bold health claims being bade about the substance with “clearly no basis.”

“People can be untrustworthy of modern medicine, and some of these alternative therapies appeal to people because they seem natural,” Dr Kilah said.
