Dutton seeks to cut permanent migration and temporarily ban foreign investors to address housing crisis
Federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton fronted his Budget reply speech last night by stating he will rebalance the migration program, hoping to free up over 100,000 homes in the first five years if elected.
Dutton said this will be done by implementing a two year ban on foreign investors buying existing Australian homes and reducing the permanent migration program by 25%.
Institute of Public Affairs Deputy Executive Director Daniel Wild told Oliver Peterson on Perth Live the current levels and lack of planning have placed huge pressures on schools, roads, hospitals and housing.
“It was an important step in the right direction, we’ve had a dramatic intake to our population over the last 2 years with around a million migrants entering on a net basis,” Wild said.
